Applying for Your NIE Through the Spanish Consulate

If you need to obtain an NIE certificate—whether because you plan to purchase property in Spain, apply for a Digital Nomad Visa, or for any other economic, professional, or social reason—you will be required to obtain an NIE number.

You can apply for the NIE through your nearest Spanish Consulate. To begin, you must book an appointment by email. Once a date and time are assigned, you will be asked to submit the following documents:

  1. Proof of residence within the Consulate’s jurisdiction. This is usually demonstrated with a driving licence.
  2. Original and a copy of your passport (main page). Nationals of EU countries may alternatively provide their national identity card.
  3. EX–15 application form, duly completed and signed. The form must specify the economic, professional, or social reasons for requesting the NIE.
  4. Supporting documentation for the reason you are applying, such as a property purchase agreement or an employment contract (original and copy).
  5. Form 790 fee (Tasa 790). This form can be completed online with your personal details, then printed. The fee is currently €9.84 and can be paid in cash at the Consulate.

The NIE is generally issued within two weeks, although this period may be extended in time. The certificate will be sent to you by email (be sure to provide a valid email address for notification purposes). The NIE certificate includes a QR code that verifies its authenticity.

Important Considerations:

The NIE is a personal, unique, and exclusive number assigned to foreigners who, due to their economic, professional, or social interests, maintain relations with Spain for identification purposes.

An NIE processed through Spanish Consular Offices allows foreign nationals to carry out procedures before Spanish Public Administrations, but it is not valid as a residence permit and does not certify legal residence in Spain.

Foreigners wishing to establish residence in Spain must first check whether they need to obtain a visa. Citizens of the European Union must register with the Central Register of Foreign Nationals once in Spain.
